The world’s largest solar thermal plant is being constructed in Mojave Desert, California having a capacity of 377 Megawatts (MW) and is estimated to power 140,000 houses. This high profile project is expected to be completed by 2014. The estimated cost of the project is reported to reach around $1.6 billion. Over 300,000 software-controlled mirrors will be used to track the rays of the sun and these rays will then be reflect to the boilers that will sit atop three 459 foot tall towers. This heat collected, will then be turned into steam that will be passed through huge turbines to generate electricity. This project is beleived to prevent the emission of over 350,000 metric tons of CO2 a year .
